Say Cheese

If you love getting off the beaten path and exploring the small towns and villages of the Finger Lakes and you like to eat, following the new’ish’ Finger Lakes Cheese trail is a great day out. This group of hard working farmers make their delicious cheeses right on their farms, so you can get up close and personal not only with the cheesemaker but sometimes with the cows and goats, too. There is plenty of variety to choose from. Finger Lakes Dexter Creamery makes a kefir cheese that’s known for it’s health benefits whereas Keeley’s Cheese Company makes a nutty, brushed rind cheese in the Irish tradition. 4 Tin Fish Farm (they do produce cheese, not fish!) makes creamy mild goat cheeses that are really tasty. Try them for breakfast on toast or a bagel. And if you just want really good cheddar, head down to Moravia to Hillcrest Dairy and buy a wedge. Check out Flcheesetrail.com for more details.

Everyone will be a ‘Cookie Monster’ once they visit Fly By Night Cookie Company in Fair Haven. This unique shop on the shores of Lake Ontario features homemade pastries in the old world tradition, made from scratch with real eggs, butter, and fresh fruit from local farms. No chemicals and no preservatives! Sixty-five varieties of homemade cookies and pastries are available all the time. Serve yourself and then relax on Bonnie’s (the owner & baker) front porch with your bag of cookies and a glass of lemonade or ice tea. You’ll feel like you’ve truly found heaven on earth! Ladies love the famous PMS cookie, a delicious mixture of moist chocolate cookie and mint frosting (think mint chocolate chip ice cream in cookie form), but all the cookies are fabulous. You would be hard pressed to find a cookie you did not like. Want the whole cookie shop experience? Don a hat and apron and work a shift with the head cookie herself! www.fairhavenny.com/cookiecompany/

Auburn, NY – History’s Hometown

Take an hour or spend a few days visiting Auburn’s historic and cultural sites and you’ll soon see why this small city is called “History’s Hometown.” Auburn is a remarkable hub for key figures and events in American history and culture with outstanding attractions related to the Civil War, Underground Railroad, Black History, art history, women’s rights and much more. Founded in 1793, the City of Auburn was the historical crossroad for famous political figures, significant events, and culture. Today, it serves as a unique window into what shaped and continues to form this country.

See where iconic American heroes Harriet Tubman and William H. Seward lived while helping lead slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad. View outstanding examples of Tiffany glass at the Willard Memorial Chapel, Cayuga Museum of History & Art and Westminster Presbyterian Church. Visit the birthplace of talking films at the Case Research Lab and take in a contemporary art exhibit or quilt show at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center. A visit to Fort Hill Cemetery is a great way to stretch your legs and take in some of Auburn’s history at the same time. Take a self-guided walking tour of this historic site and active cemetery where notable people such as William H. Seward, Harriet Tubman, Theodore Case and others were laid to rest. Top off your day with a comedy act, play or even a dance performance at Auburn Public Theater. You will not be short of things to see and do and everything is within a 5-mile radius of downtown, Auburn.

A great time to visit Auburn is on the first Friday of every month, when the City’s historical and cultural sites open their doors to visitors with food, entertainment, free admission, and special offers from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

For more information on Auburn’s attractions and events, as well as places to dine, shop and stay, visit www.historyshometown.org or call 800-499-9615.

Hoopes Park

Hoopes Park – A Garden of Earthly Delights

Nestled into a residential neighborhood and bordering East Genesee Street across from Herman Ave. Elementary School, Hoopes Park is a perfect spot to stop and enjoy nature in an urban setting.

On the afternoon of the Auburn Beautification Commission Annual Summer Garden Tour, I drove across town to Hoopes Park to pick up the directional map and then set off exploring the eight private gardens.

But I knew I needed to come back to the starting point to enjoy the plantings and take a quick walk.

So back I went the next day with my daughter and we found the park to be very pleasant. We were immediately greeted by an almost blind elderly dog out for her morning constitution and glimpsed a walking-talking tangle of dogs and people with travel coffee mugs.

During the summer months, Hoopes Park is a real slice of Americana with kids running around doing somersaults while an ice cream truck’s chimes beckon and young and old sit in folding chairs talking and waiting for the entertainment to start.

A ½ mile paved path which circles the Hunter’s Pond welcomes dog walkers, baby strollers and nature lovers in any season. Mature specimen trees including majestic oaks, beech, maple, mountain ash and flowering crabapples give shade for the nicely spaced benches. A secluded cedar grove is a perfect place to ponder the day. Take time to rest, watch the clouds, read or admire the beds of annuals and perennials as you circle the pond..

Maintained by the City of Auburn with help from community volunteers, there are many varieties of flowers to admire including canna lilies, begonia, sunflowers, Rose of Sharon, astilbe, sedum of all types, Echinacea and phlox along with a butterfly garden and gurgling fountain. Memorial markers dot the park designating trees and benches donated in memory of a loved one. The “Fountain of Life” instructs passers-by through an inscribed verse and offers a cool drink. There are handicapped accessible restrooms in the Club House. City employees raise seedlings in a small greenhouse.

A heron has taken up residence on the small island while Mallard ducks and their babies float by waiting for a bread crust to be tossed to them. A fountain, lit at night, keeps the air cool and breezy. When the winter cold hits and the pond freezes, skaters enjoy strapping on their skates for a spin around the ice.

The striking green and white gazebo and the newly renovated Club House are perfect for wedding ceremonies. It is common for two or three bridal parties to be there at the same time as Hoopes Park is “the” place for beautiful wedding and Prom photos during the spring, summer and fall.

Community events such as the starting point for the Auburn Beatification Commission Annual Garden Tour, Hospice “Light Up a Life” Tree Lighting Ceremony, The City Summer Concert series and “drive-in” movies hosted by the Auburn Cinefile Society all take place in this natural setting.

Winter, spring, summer or fall, there is always something to capture the eye at Hoopes Park.

Falcon Park

Baseball, peanuts and Crackerjacks – Falcon Park has it all!

On a recent Thursday evening which just happened to be “Dollar Night”, my family and I headed out N. Division Street to Falcon Park to catch a baseball game between the home team, The Doubleday’s, and rivals, The Lowell Spinners. We did spring for box seats for comfort-sake, but noticed that the bleachers now have backs, too. There is handicapped parking right near the gate and all parking is free. The Doubleday’s are a Class A Short Season Affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Tickets may be purchased on-line.

Abner Doubleday, mascot of the team, wanders the stadium shaking hands, hosting various competitions between innings and generally acting as the Head Cheerleader for the vocal crowd. History has it that Abner grew up in Auburn when his father, Ulysses who fought in the War of 1812, represented the community in Congress for 4 years. Alter on, Abner moved to Cooperstown to live with an aunt and uncle and attend school. Now, Auburn does not claim he invented baseball here – but perhaps he was just inspired.

We all enjoyed a Hoffman hotdog or two, a bag of peanuts and either a soda or beer – for $1 each! There are other food options, but those are a bit more expensive. Sadly, there are actually not any Crackerjacks.

Each night, the national anthem is sung a local “American Idol”, a member of the community who auditioned and was selected. I heard that the night before a Barbershop Quartet led the singing. Introductions of the teams follow, again with whistling and stomping from the receptive crowd.

A quick watering of the in-field and it was time to “play ball”. As the sun set and the temperature dropped, the sky was illuminated by the stadium lights while pink streaked clouds rolled by. Somehow color is sharpened and it feels like you are in a Cecil B. de Mille movie made in the 50’s. Everything is in Technicolor.

Seated right behind home plate, we could see all the action during the game. And what action! The Doubleday’s made 6 runs in the 5th inning and finished out with a score of 10 to 2. The crowd certainly hooted and hollered and cheered on our team.

This was my mother’s third baseball game – in her entire life. There was plenty of talk about pitchers, catchers and foul balls. Baseball is a game for everyone. It is not difficult to understand the rules and the scoreboard keeps you posted on the strikes/balls/outs.

The sing-a-long at the 7th inning stretch is a tradition as are raffles, 50/50’s, announcements about sponsoring business and upcoming events. The Auburn Rotary was hosting the Beer Tent and, according to an involved Rotarian, made over $170 in tips to use for local projects.

All in all, a night at Falcon Park is inexpensive, wholesome All-American and quite entertaining. We will be back again this summer for another Doubleday’s baseball game.

Susan Marteney is an adjunct professor at Cayuga Community College teaching Art History; co-owner of Tuxill House, a European-style guest house in Auburn; an avid gardener; and a community activist.

Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center

Pssst! You want to hear one of Auburn’s best kept secrets? At the Schweinfurth Art Center there’s a gift shop that’s a little gem on West Genesee Street in Auburn.

If I could change the name of the shop and of course I can’t, but IF I could, I’d name it “Artsy-Fartsy Shop.” The stuff there is so artsy and clever and useful!

I love their birthday cards—my sisters often say, “Where do you find these cards?”

My answer, “Oh the gift shop at the Art Center.”

Allison Mitura, the Program Director said that “When people find us, they come back for everything from birthdays, Administrative Professional’s day, to anniversaries. And men come here for just that special gift for their wives. Plus there are many items that are affordable enough for kids.”

The gift shop is one of Auburn’s best kept secrets but it’s time to let the truth be told. If you are looking for a unique, beautifully made gift—stop by the Art Center Gift Shop.

This gift shop rivals the Everson’s. But a lot of people don’t really think about it. It’s so accessible from downtown Auburn. And with the many changing art shows—there are numerous times that you would want to check out the art center anyway. There are five exhibitions per year and they change about every 6-8 weeks, wonderful, remarkable art—never boring, never dull, and always inspiring.

The annual quilt show is known internationally. It’s prestigious and edgy. You will be amazed by the textures, forms, pushing the bar higher and higher so that some are literally “out of the park.”

Art balances our lives with hope, peace, and joy. When I walk around the Art Center I can feel my body relax. I can feel the excitement that an artist evokes in me and other times I stop in my tracks and gaze awestruck taking in slow deep breaths and exhaling even slower--which any yoga instructor would encourage. I like the way that art affects my psyche and outlook.

Art can reach people on a cellular level—whether its nostalgia, shock, amazement, and whether it’s with material, glass, copper, cotton, brass, bronze, threads, clay, colors or space; art can free you from your perpetual thoughts.

Please check out the website of Schweinfurth Art Center, to see when they are holding art classes, poetry readings, open mics. It’s great for field trips or solo visits, a place for meditation and stimulation. You will enjoy the experience; a great place to meet a friend, to enjoy the new show, shop a little, and then sit at a little round table to “catch-up”.

Get on their facebook page, their e-mailing list, attend the First Fridays, and go to the Art Center’s Gift Shop!

Bobbie Panek lives in Central NY. She’s a poet, writer and wanderlust. You can read more about her at Bobbiepanek.com

The welcoming honk of migrating Canada geese and the wafting aroma of cow are true heralds of Spring in the Finger Lakes. My fingers have been twitching for the last few weeks as the snow has started to melt and the temperatures are reaching up close to 60. I am ready to start getting dirt under my fingernails. This means some thoughtful pondering about new plants for both the flower and vegetable gardens.

Dickman Farms, Archie Street, Auburn is a great place to visit at any time of year. A huge - and I mean huge - green house offers a wide variety of plant materials at any season. Trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, orchids, colorful Italian pots, cactus, water features, fountains and a very nice gift shop.

I purchased a fountain last fall and have been dreaming all winter about where it will go in my own yard. The soft murmur of water just makes me feel cool during the hot summer. My old foundation was a 5 gallon galvanized tub with a copper pipe taped to a fish tank bubbler. It worked and the sparrows and cardinals took long baths while the neighborhood cats enjoyed a quick drink. This summer, the garden will be styling for sure.

This time of year, I can be tempted by those smiling yellow and purple pansies that will last until the first snow. The staff is very helpful and ready to answer any questions. During the year, Dickman’s offers classes and workshop on topics from making tufa planters to living wreaths.

Morgan’s Half Acre Produce located at the corner of West Genesee Street Road and Rote 326 at the edge of Auburn, and The Produce Place, 293 Cayuga Street, Union Springs, offer hanging plants, vegetables seedlings and a wide assortment of other flora for any taste. Each stand also offers tasty treats too.

The Auburn Beautification Commission will host a Garden Tour on Sunday, July 14. I cannot tell you which gardens will be included as it is a surprise each year when you start off on the afternoon adventure. This is a rare opportunity to see a private backyard or an established perennial garden and talk to a knowledgeable horticulturalist. I participated three years ago and enjoyed preparing my own yard. It was hard, hot and dirty work, but worth it to share the beauty with guests.

Hoopes Park, located on East Genesee Street and maintained by the City of Auburn, is a real gem. There is a Club House situated at the edge of the pond, winding paths for a walk and seating through the park for a rest under a canopy of maples and sycamores. Bring along some bread crusts to feed the ducks.

During the summer on Tuesday and Thursday nights, there are concerts and outdoor movies. An ice cream truck usually comes through the neighborhood just about the time the movie starts. It is BYOC – Bring Your Own Chair.

The studio barn of Mackenzie-Childs, home to world-renowned majolica tableware and furnishings in Aurora, is situated on a 65-acre farm with a gracious brick drive leading visitors past the farmhouse, a duck pond, elaborate chicken house and finally to the shop.

But don’t miss the garden near the barn – site of the summer sale to be held at a date as yet unknown – which is so full of every color of annual and perennial that is almost overwhelming. I am sure some of the local manure from their Highland cattle must be used for the delphinium to be as tall as it is. There are often Victorian favorites like Cock’s Comb, iris and French marigolds. It is a sight to enjoy after some quick shopping and a tour of the studio.

Don’t be scared about taking a plant home with you. It is a great way to remember a visit to the Finger Lakes for years to come.

Cayuga Community College Nature Trail

Cayuga Community College’s Nature Trail

A place of beauty and peace

blog by Bobbie Panek

The sound beneath my feet is crushed gravel and the occasional crackle of dried leaves. Cicada’s sizzle fills the air in the heat of summer and birds call to each other as they flit from tree to tree.

A lone rabbit sits beside the path. He’s facing the woods and his big brown eye’s watching me. Quickly he scampers into the woods.

A young couple holding hands kick the same small green wild apple, their own soccer game; and they are on the same team.

And then I see the deer, her light brown body shimmering in the fading sun. When she picks up her head and looks at me, her large pointed ears look like golden gilded elm leaves.

Another young couple sits on the wooden glider swing. She leans on her backpack with her feet dangling from the side. They are deep in conversation.

It’s hard to describe the nature trail and what you’ll find there. Maybe it’s the trees with their different textures, maybe it’s the ponds with their ripples, maybe it’s the turtles who sun themselves on the jutting rocks, or the way the sun casts shadows in the woods.

Maybe it’s the wooden bridges with their moans and groans, or the butterflies that play hide and seek, it could be the curve of the trail, or the berry bushes that sparkle red and purple. It could be the tall timothy grass and the vines traveling up trunks. Or maybe it’s the woodpecker’s tap tap tap.

When you decide to go to the nature trail behind Cayuga Community College, bring along all of your senses. See if you can find the tree root that looks like the eye of an ostrich, look for a bird’s feather on the ground, have a seat on the polished red bench in the shade, and try to find the fake frightening bat in the crux of a branch. Look for bark hanging by threads and purple thistle that displays its brilliant fuchsia flowers as if invited to the landscape. See if you can find the large rock in the shape of an English springer spaniel. Can you find a pine tree dripping sap from its trunk like an open wound?

The trail is about one mile long and it curves around a natural woods. Every season this trail is inspiring whether it’s a summer day or the coldest day in winter. It’s a great trail for you to sink into the sights and sounds of nature; where you can retreat from traffic and tv.

It’s a place for thoughtful musings, for a great conversation with a friend while getting exercise, a place to bring your children for them to play and explore. What awonderful treasure we have here in Cayuga County and hopefully it will be enjoyed by many--whatever the season.

This wonderland is beckoning you. Maybe a Great Blue Heron will welcome you at the pond. There’s plenty of parking in the college parking lot. So c’mon, do some exploring.

Church Suppers and Potluck Dinners in Cayuga County

I can only say that there are many wonderful restaurants in the Finger Lakes which serve incredible meals using local meats and vegetables, hand-made cheeses and organic greens all created by extremely accomplished chefs. These can be complimented by locally produced wines, beers and distilled beverages. You can even learn how to cook at epicurean spots like the Aurora Inn.

But - don’t disregard “The Church Supper” because we are now talking home cooking. Comfort foods just like your grandmamma made! Not fancy and probably no Finger Lakes wines will be served – but a strong cup of coffee and a full plate of delicious food for sure will fill your belly.

In our local newspaper on just one day alone there were six offerings. The Order of the Rainbow was serving up a French Toast Breakfast with sausages, scrambled eggs, mini –muffins, juice and coffee and French Toast – all for $5. The First Baptist Church was hosting a Ham Dinner including mashed potatoes, scalloped pineapple, carrots, desserts and a beverage for $8 and free for children under 5. A vegan group held a potluck supper at The Ward O'Hara Agricultural Museum requesting that guests bring along the recipe and a place setting. A Chicken Barbeque with all the fixin’s for $8 per meal. A Dip Dinner where you pay per spoonful of each selection you make of a delectable homemade goodie. Out in Ledyard, there was a Turkey and Scalloped Oyster Dinner with mashed potatoes, cranapple sauce and homemade brown bread and pies. Only $9 or adults and $5 for children 6 to 12. Take-out was also available. I can smell and taste it all right now!

Add in a pork chop dinner; family-style roast beef; lasagna dinner; ham supper; ham and scalloped potatoes; all-you-can-eat pork dinner with squash and rolls; and a turkey dinner. The choices are amazing.

Located in Downtown Auburn, St. Mary’s Catholic Church has been hosting a Pasta Dinner on the second Tuesday of the month for years and years. While we don’t go every month, my daughter and I find that a meal out every once in a while is great fun. We may even ask a friend to join us for dinner. A salad and bread and butter, a huge plate of pasta, sauce and meatballs are finished off by a homemade brownie with ice cream. Coffee, milk or juice compliment the dinner. Eat in or take out. And at $7 per person and kids under 12 free, how can you go wrong?

Don’t get me started on the Polish and Ukrainian church pierogi and kapusta deals and the Church bazaars all over the county!

These Church Suppers take place all year long so make sure you check out the local newspapers – The Citizen and the Pennysaver - for a great dinner. I am betting you will be welcomed liked family.

Bird watching at the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge

Montezuma Wildlife Refuge is a bird watching paradise. Situated in the Finger Lakes its wet lands where birds, especially geese (Canadian and Snow) and ducks galore stop by for respite. Eagles were recently reintegrated and Osprey nests can be seen on high wire towers along Routes 5 and 20.

Located in 3 counties, in the Finger Lakes Region the refuge is open every day. Travel by car is limited in winter when the weather turns too wintry for safe driving. But you are always welcome to hike and enjoy the well traveled trails. You are welcome to snowshoe, cross-country ski, bring your binoculars and your camera and enjoy.

Wildlife such as white tail deer, fox, and rabbits abound. Blue Jays, Nuthatches, Woodpeckers, and Chickadees can be seen and heard in winter.

There is a visitor’s center with a deck and tower which are a good look-out spots. The Center is staffed mostly with volunteers so it’s a good idea to call first if you want to get information inside the center:

Tasha, one of the full time employees, says that the Refuge is an Atlantic flyway for migratory birds, and a precious resource for the birds and as well as for us. She also pointed out that the wetlands filter water which is another wonderful benefit.

Some recent bird sightings were: Fish crows, Redpolls, Screech Owl, Townsend Solitaire and many others.

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge is in partnership with D.E.C. land, and the Montezuma Audubon, which is further north on Rte. 89.

At the refuge there is a program called M.A.R.S.H. (Montezuma Alliance for Restoration of Species and Habitats) where volunteers do biological work alongside biologists. They do Raptor surveys, on MARSH days, they pull invasive plants, and do Black Tern surveys, and duck banding.

On Saturday, January 26th, 2013 there will be a program on Short eared Owls and will include a short nature walk. It’s open to the public from 2-3:30 PM. You don’t need to register. If you are a Friend of Montezuma Audubon, it’s free. Otherwise for students its $3 and regular admission is $5. Monies collected will go to the Friends group for invasive species removal, and for the dry marsh project. (They are going to convert some cattails to a new pool.)

You can be a Friend of Montezuma Audubon by checking out the website or by calling 315-365-3580. Friends put on presentations and lecture series.

What a wonderful resource in our Finger Lakes. We are so fortunate. The Montezuma Wildlife Refuge is here for our enjoyment.

The Finger Lakes loves Millard Fillmore, 13th President of the United States of America

With President’s Day coming up and so much attention being given to the leaders of this great country, this is a fine time to crow about Millard Fillmore. He was born right here in the Finger Lakes, in Moravia, NY. And we are proud of that fact.

Fillmore was a small town boy. He was from meager beginnings and went to a one room school house and fell in love with and married his teacher Abigail.

Fillmore never became very wealthy and his time in office wasn’t that defining. But the amazing truth is that anyone can become president even a small town guy from the Finger Lakes Region.

Abraham Lincoln, another President with meager beginnings, and Millard Fillmore met in 1861 and went to church together in Buffalo. Mary Todd Lincoln helped to make Moravia a spiritual Mecca. You might want to check out the History House on West Cayuga Street in Moravia to see many personal items of President Millard Fillmore as well as information about Mary Lincoln’s endeavors.

Moravia is a quiet little village with some amazing tourist locations. One is the Fillmore Glen State Park. There you will find a replica of Fillmore’s cabin. It’s so interesting. You can go in and look around during daylight hours in mid April—mid November. It’s just a tiny little house. Even in the winter time you can peek in and imagine the family inside cozy and close!

The park is wonderful for hiking and seasonal camping with many beautiful waterfalls and well marked trails.

Another intriguing place in Fillmore’s hometown is St. Matthews Episcopal Church. Inside are intricate carvings and figures by Charles Hull and Hans Mayer.

There will be a Birthday Celebration for Fillmore on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at the Town Hall Building at 13606 Route 90 Summerhill, NY at 1 PM. Call 315-497-3559 for more details.

Millard Fillmore and the Cayuga Connection

There are 3,033 counties in the US and not many of them can boast that a President was born there, but Cayuga County certainly can. Millard Fillmore, 13th President from 1805 - 53, was born in a log cabin in what is now called Summer Hill, a small community in the Finger Lakes situated on Rte. 90 in the southern end of Cayuga County.

On a snowy Sunday afternoon, my daughter and I joined the Cayuga-Owasco Lakes Historical Society for a Pot Luck Supper to celebrate his 213th birthday. After upbeat recital of American folk music and the sharing of good food, we sang a rousing “Happy Birthday” to this infamous gent. No one would say that Fillmore was a great President, but he did make the American dream come true.

The story goes that a redheaded young lady from Moravia – just down the road from Summer Hill - took a teaching post at an academy in New Hope where her oldest pupil was 19-year-old Millard. Gradually the relationship of teacher and student evolved into a romantic attachment. A long courtship ensued; they were finally married at the home of her brother, Judge Powers, when Millard was 26 and Abigail 27. Without a honeymoon, they settled at East Aurora, New York. Mrs. Fillmore continued teaching until the birth of their son.

In 1823, Millard was admitted to the bar; seven years later he moved his law practice to Buffalo. As a Whig, Fillmore held state office and for eight years was a member of the House of Representatives. In 1848, while Comptroller of New York, he was elected Vice President. The death of President Taylor in July 1850 meant a sudden accession to the Presidency for Fillmore.

But back to Cayuga County. Tradition has it that Fillmore installed indoor plumbing in The White House. To celebrate this great accomplishment and after a hiatus of many years, The Town of Summerhill will again host The Fillmore Bath Tub Races on Saturday of Labor Day Weekend. On Sunday, there will be a huge Antique Auto Show at Fillmore Glen, a wonderful state park at the south end of the village.

Today, you can camp, take a dip and hike through the Glen and then up and over on a 3.5 mile trail to the site of Fillmore’s birth log cabin. Bring your lunch as there is a picnic shelter with running water.

An additional tidbit about Millard Fillmore is that he met another President who was also born in a log cabin - Abraham Lincoln. In 1861, Lincoln left Illinois by train and made a stop in Buffalo to call on Fillmore prior to continuing on to Washington. Lincoln stayed for about 3 days and attended church with Fillmore and his family.

The Lincoln connection continues for Fillmore and Cayuga County. On Friday, April 28, 1865, President Lincoln's funeral train began its journey across New York State. Train stations were draped with flags as were private residencies along the way. Soldiers lined the tracks and men silently raised their hats to the hearse-car containing the remains of the truly lamented president. In Batavia, the train stopped and ex-President Millard Fillmore boarded, along with several other dignitaries. They remained on the funeral train until Buffalo when they escorted the remains to St. James Hall. Two days later, the procession returned to the railroad station and left for Cleveland about 10 am.

Cayuga County was still in the news when Mary Todd Lincoln visited Moravia in 1872 helping to make Moravia famous internationally as “The Mecca of Spiritualism.” An exhibit about her visit, the history of the beginnings of spiritualism in Cayuga County and, of course, President Millard Fillmore can be viewed at the History House, West Cayuga Street, Moravia. Unlike other U.S. presidents who have their own libraries and buildings, the History House in Moravia has the only public exhibit of the 13th president's personal effects and memorabilia.

Cayuga County can brag of William H. Seward, Harriet Tubman, Henry Wells, Lucretia Mott Osborne, Emily Howland, The Dulles Family - and President Millard Fillmore.

Top Ice Cream Picks in Cayuga County

Hot weather is almost upon us and what is better to cool you off than ice cream? Cayuga County has at least 100 ice cream stands but I am only going to tell you about five. Explore any small village in the Finger Lakes Region and there always is an ice cream stand or two.

Reese’s, out on Routes 5 & 20 West, has some of the best Orange Sherbet/Vanilla Swirl I have ever tasted and, in fact, I have never had any other flavor at Reese’s. I know there are others flavors plus sundaes, hot dogs and other treats, but that flavor just hits me right. Big cones loaded with taste. The parking lot is always full so they must be doing something right.

Pete’s Treats, Rte. 90, Union Springs, is a cute walk-up window place next door to The Produce Place. Again, a great selection of flavors, great service and other options beyond ice cream.

Ed & Jean’s Ice Cream Stand, Port Byron, will not disappoint you either with a great selection of flavors. Stop on your back from Fair Haven and a day at the state park on Lake Ontario and you will not go home hungry.

Tom Thumb on Rte. 38A, Owasco, offers ice cream; Hoffman hot dogs and Coneys, a real Central New York tradition; onion rings and other “food” ranges plus a fabulous view of Owasco Lake. Soft and hard ice cream, frozen yogurt, sugar free options and 30 or more flavors to choose from will all confuse and delight you.

Cream at the Top, Rte. 34b, King Ferry, is really the cream of the crop! Open from 3 – 9 pm usually, it offers more than 40 flavors of delectable ice cream and there are sure to be a few which will tempt you. There are plenty of picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy a breeze and whatever flavor tickles your fancy.

My favs are Cinnamon and Green Tea and while I cannot always get it here, it is usually on the menu. Look for the mascot - cow holding an ice cream cone - perched on top of the stand.

New at Cream at the Top for 2013 are some mouthwatering sections. “Queen of Hearts” features dark chocolate ice cream with raspberry swirls and fudge filled hearts while “Appalachian Trail” offers lush banana ice cream with honey crunch cashews and chocolate flakes. “Oh my, Cherry Pie” is vanilla ice-cream with cherries and graham cracker swirls. Sort of a cherry pie a la mode in a cone! And finally, there is “It’s Movie Time!” with popcorn flavored ice cream and sea salt caramel swirls and caramel truffles. A small cone is big - so plan ahead. Your eyes may be bigger than your stomach.

So start screaming because Cayuga County certainly has ice cream for you!

Harriet Tubman, The Moses of Her People

Auburn and Cayuga County has been home to many prominent figures in American history and 2013 will be a year of celebrating one such “celebrity” – Harriet Tubman.

Tradition has it that Harriet’s ancestors were from Ghana. My family and I feel like we have a particular connection to her as we hosted an exchange from Ghana. Demaris was aware of Harriet Tubman and her American connection and felt privileged to live in Tubman’s “home town”.

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland around 1822 escaping from bondage in 1849. Once free, she became an operator of the Underground Railroad — a secret network of people, places and routes that provided shelter and assistance to escaping slaves. She boldly returned South to rescue family and friends, guiding them safely to freedom. By 1860, Tubman had earned the nickname “Moses” for selflessly liberating the enslaved.

Cayuga County, along with many other areas of New York State, was a linking route on the Underground Railroad sheltering, transporting and helping slaves to escape into free Canada. With a high population of Quakers and many of the early “feminist” of the Women’s Suffrage Movement living in the area, it is no surprise that Harriet Tubman ultimately settled on South Street in Auburn.

Patronage from William H. Seward, famous for his deep connection to Abraham Lincoln, and other leading community supporters made sure that she was equipped to offer assistance and sustenance to others. Tubman developed a complex of buildings including an “old folk’s home”, hospital and other critical needs facilities. These can be toured and experienced today.

Since March 10 marks the centennial of Harriet Tubman's death, many communities around the world will honor her by hosting special events, pilgrimages, lectures and programs to celebrate her legacy during 2013.

The first commemorative event in Auburn is on Friday, March 8, featuring a community gathering at 5:30 pm at the Booker T. Washington Community Center, 23 Chapman Avenue.

On Saturday morning at 8:30 am, there will be a brief service and presentation of a burial wreath at the Thompson Memorial AME Zion Church, 47 Parker Street. Guests will then go to the Fort Hill Cemetery, easily accessible from the church, to place a wreath on her gravesite and pay respect.

On Sunday, March 10, the church will recognize the actual 100th Anniversary of Harriet Tubman’s passing in the morning and afternoon. At the regular 11 A.M. service, special invitee, Mrs. Constance Evelyn, Superintendent of the Auburn Enlarged School District, will be the guest speaker. A 3 P.M., in partnership with aaduna, Inc., Thompson Memorial AME Zion will present the premier performance of poetic works by Cyd Charisse Fulton that celebrates the history, legacy, impact and effect of Tubman on subsequent generations since her death. The audience will be able to engage Ms. Fulton in a Q&A session after the reading and converse with her at a reception. The reception will immediately follow the reading.

On May 18, the A.M.E. Zion Church hosts the Annual Harriet Tubman Pilgrimage. The day begins at 9 am with a wreath laying ceremony at Tubman’s gravesite in Fort Hill Cemetery followed by a memorial service at the home on South Street with a guest speaker and concert by the A.M.E.Z. Chorale.

During the afternoon pageant, Miss Harriet Tubman will be crowned. The ceremony recognizes the church which raised the most funds to carry on the upkeep of the property through the Harriet Tubman Foundation. The property was deeded to the church in 1940. The entire day is free and open to the public.

On August 3, Founders Day 2013 will highlight Harriet Tubman and her impact on Auburn, New York and the USA; there will be many events throughout the City of Auburn

Susan Marteney is an adjunct professor at Cayuga Community College teaching Art History; co-owner of Tuxill House, a European-style guest house in Auburn; an avid gardener; and a community activist.

The Women of the Seward House

South Street in Auburn, New York has been home to many American notables with one in particular - William H. Seward - being quite trendy at this time due to the recent movie, Lincoln.

But there were members of the Seward family who were behind the scenes supporting him, guiding him, helping him to become a great politician and statesman. One such personage was his quiet and rather unassuming wife, Frances Miller Seward.

Raised a Quaker, Frances believed in equality and expressed her views about abolition and Women’s Suffrage to her husband when he was Governor of New York State and later Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln. The expansive collection of their correspondence is now at the University of Rochester.

With the Seward House Museum barely two blocks from my home, I often drive past it several times in a day. It is a large and stately mansion painted a lovely pumpkiny yellow with green shutters. It is impressive but not imposing.

Yesterday on a visit to the museum, I was surprised when I came face-to-face with Frances Seward as I entered the well-stocked library. She proceeded to tell me that there are 2,500 books in that room alone with over 7,000 total tomes in the home. Her favorites are all collected along one shelf and are primarily religious in nature. Frances did tell me that she enjoys reading having been exposed to Great Literature while at the Emma Willard Seminary which she attended with her husband’s sister, Cornelia.

Frances seems quite proud of her home and invited me to view the newly bedecked the dining room. The long tabletop has been set with five different place settings to illustrate various courses; the opulent taste of the 1860’s; formal and informal dining options; and the wide range of cutlery necessary to properly set a fine table. I am rather glad that all that is not expected by dinner guests today.

Prominent in the center of the table is a place setting of Old Paris porcelain, the everyday china from about 1855. There are over 200 pieces ranging from dinner plates to demitasse, from tiered cake stands for tea time and covered pot de crème along with serving dishes and much more. The center of each plate did have the family motto, “esse quam videri” (to be, rather than to seem (to be) which has worn off due to use. Fruits of all manner – apples, plums, strawberries, cherries and watermelon slices – are ringed by a clear blue edging and gold leaf.

During March which is Women’s History Month, you too can have an opportunity to “meet” Frances and some of the other Seward ladies when you tour The Seward House Museum. These special tours will be held each Saturday in March at 11 am and will last for one hour; reservations are recommended.

On March 16, the museum will host “The Hutchinson Family Revival” concert at 1 pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church, which sits just across the street. Local women’s groups will also be on hand to share information.

Starting in May, there will be “Fanny Tours” which feature a costumed interpreter using diaries to guide you through the home while telling the story of an important American family.

Fanny, William and Frances’ daughter, did not go to off to school but instead was educated by her mother and a governess at home. She was exposed to Milton, Homer and Shakespeare and other necessary womanly skills such as dancing and music and handwork. Her father gave her a diary when she was 14 and throughout her life, she kept track of her daily affairs and dreamed of being a writer. But this was not an appropriate career path for a lady.

One can be overwhelmed by the accomplishments of the man of the house, but don’t miss out on learning more about the women who really ran it all. They will surprise you.

Susan Marteney is an adjunct professor at Cayuga Community College teaching Art History; co-owner of Tuxill House, a European-style guest house in Auburn; an avid gardener; and a community activist.

Memorial Day in Cayuga County

Memorial Day in Cayuga County is celebrated with many wonderful events: a parade downtown, a Duck Derby managed by Kiwanis where you can name a little yellow rubber ducky, and if their duck leads the pack to the finish line, wonderful prizes await you--the lucky duck.

Musical sensations abound at the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse; “Singin' in the Rain” will open on May 29th thru June 19th.

And at the end of May, a lot of people will be stooping, kneeling, sitting, and bending to plant their favorite flower and vegetable seeds in the ground. Cosmos flowers are my all-time favorite annual. And the end of May is the perfect time to plant them here in the Finger Lakes.

The name cosmos comes from Greek for beautiful and orderly—and by golly they are all that! They come in brilliant pinks, fuchsias, magentas, white, and gold, yellow, and orange. They are tall with wispy leaves and on a sultry summer day, they dance in the breeze like tall lovely girls.

Their seeds are long, thin, and pointy unlike the itty bitty ones that slip between your fingers. If you plant them at the end of May, by the beginning of August you will have lovely dancers in your favorite flower bed. And these girls are hearty. They will continue to grow and flourish through fall. Of course there are many flowers that prosper well in our fertile Finger Lakes region. My hydrangeas, roses, delphinium, sunflowers, pansies, peonies, all love it here.

One thing I will miss this Memorial Day will be the fighter jets flying overheard in formation. But I understand, we need to cut back where we can. Maybe I can make up for it by planting some red, white and blue flowers in a group and whenever I look at it, it can bring to memory all of the veterans who fought for us, so that we may live free.

Finger Lakes Sweet Treat Trail and Farmers Markets

Who doesn’t like sweet treats? You can find yummy baked goods, ice cream, pies and cookies, jams and jellies, apples, peaches and strawberries, maple syrup and honey and fresh produce right here in Cayuga County on the Sweet Treat Trail Tasting Tour.

I decided to investigate my own Tasting Tour on a cold March afternoon. The air was pungent with the mouth-watering fragrance of maple when my sister and I hit Smokey Hollow Maple Syrup, Pierce Road, Jordan. We spotted some wild turkey and a pond full of Canada geese on our way out. One field even had a flock of robins that had arrived perhaps a bit too early.

We were delighted by the fact-filled tour of the sugar shack and the great selection of maple syrup, sweet and hot mustard and candies in the small shop. While I was talking to owner Jim, Martha ate our entire bag of warm maple kettle corn, but Jim graciously gave me another bag to munch on – just for me.

The Sweet Treat Trail Tasting Tour is a new opportunity to get out, drive a scenic country road or two and find some great food. I don’t know about you, but I enjoy a Sunday Afternoon Drive just like my family did in my childhood. Get out there and explore! Cayuga County is making it easy for you to find a car-full of tasty treats.

With a kick-off on May 3 during Auburn’s First Friday and running through the summer until September 7 and 8 at TomatoFest, 27 Sweet Treat Trail members will greet visitors who are out and about on the Summer Tasting Tour. Pick up a tasting Tour Pass, visit 10 spots then drop it off at TomatoFest to win one of 3 baskets chock full of incredible edibles, gift certificates and award winning Finger Lakes wines.

Farmers’ Markets are a perfect place to find a great selection of edibles. Cayuga County hosts 8 markets which pop up in small communities on different days. You might find colorful flowers, luscious strawberries, snappy peas, acorn or Hubbard squash and home-made breads plus crafts by local artists, music and even fresh farm eggs. It all depends upon the season. Most Farmers’ Markets start up about mid-June and run through the end of October.

Cornell Cooperative Extension often offers cooking lessons and tasting at local Farmers’ Markets. This is a great opportunity to try something new grown in the Finger Lakes.

Willard Memorial Chapel

Tall, majestic, Romanesque, grey and red stone bursting with history and color~

If you are looking for an historic and strikingly, beautiful chapel go to 17 Nelson Street in Auburn, New York, and you will find a wonderful building of gray limestone and red sandstone that looks as though it was plucked from Rome.

It was built in 1892 and served as a chapel for the seminary. The Welch Memorial Building which adjoins the chapel has many classrooms which were later used as a college, and presently are used as a community center for many agencies.

Fortunately, a group of individuals from Auburn fought to preserve the structure. This is one of those happy ending stories where the wrecking ball was sent away and the majestic spiritual icon stands. The Willard Memorial Chapel is now on the State and National Register of Historic Places.

As you approach the grounds you begin to feel the history. You know that you are on sacred land. The colorful building owns the space. No matter the season, it charms the scenery. In winter it’s warm and inviting. In summer it harmonizes with the dark greens of the landscape and it’s incredibly stunning.

Concert series are held year round. And the weddings there are enchanting. The chapel is small and intimate, the oak woodwork exquisite, and the stained glass windows are masterpieces by Tiffany. I’ve attended a few weddings in the chapel. To see details for planning your wedding there just click on weddings

I remember going to hear The Colgate 13 a cappella group on a winter day. It was snowing and blustery on my way there; but once inside the warm oaken interior, the sun came out. As I sat in the wooden pews under the stained glass chandeliers hanging by thick gold chains, the sun shone through the side windows. I was transfixed by the brilliant and stunning artwork. The voices of the chorus swirled around the room, dancing on the walls, and bouncing off the colored glass.

It’s so easy to meditate when you sit in the cozy yet magnificent interior. You can close your eyes and imagine the chants from a century ago.

Every inch of this chapel is artistic: from the tiny (maybe ½ inch square) inlaid glass mosaic tiled floor, to the stenciled ceilings. The tall pipes leading skyward from the 19th century organ were originally stenciled, later painted, but the resilient stencil is beginning to shine through the layer of paint. The pulpit is inlaid with gems, metals and glass. The pews have deep burgundy velvet cushions. The chandeliers are fascinating with their glass uranium prisms (which actually glow under black lights.)

I was there today and sat in on a tour (which is held every hour T-F from 10 a.m.--3 PM). A young mother and her two children were eager to learn about the chapel. I enjoyed the five-year-old boy’s remarks:

“All those pipes, I like them the best.”

“And those stained glasses. That’s what I love.”

“I like the greens.”

“And I could build all this in one day, starting at one minute, ending at 2 o’clock.”

You just have to smile at a youngster’s concept of time.

On the way out of the chapel the young boy mentioned to the docent giving us the tour, “And next we’re going to see a train under the ground!”

His mother corrected him, “It’s not an actual train underground; it’s a passage for people to travel.”

It feels good to see young children showing enthusiasm for the unique touches of Tiffany. I almost wanted to follow him, his mother, and sister, to hear his comments when he got to the Harriet Tubman Home…

For more information about this authentic and artistic chapel just click here: Willard Memorial Chapel

The William Seward Vegetable Garden

Ever wonder what William Seward and his family were growing and eating out of their vegetable garden in the 1860’s? Stop by the historic home at 33 South Street, Auburn to get the answer. There are various herbs like mint and borage, tomatoes, cucumbers, pole beans, squash and much more. Explore varieties of heirloom plants.

A delightful fountain which features two children under an open umbrella will be gurgling in the back ground. Colorful annuals and perennials brighten up the beds as you meander the pathways to the “summer house” at the back edge of the garden. It is hard to believe that this tranquil setting is smack in the center of Auburn right next to the Farmers’ Market and City Hall.

I like to picture myself in the garden wearing a long summer gown swinging my parasol while perhaps sitting for an hour or two reading “Little Women” or “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” even a tantalizing book by the outrageous Mark Twain.

As you tour the house and see the stunning dining room table set with imported china and silver place settings, think what it would be like if you were a guest and enjoying a fine dinner with William Seward.

History, Nature and Fun in the Finger Lakes

Break out of your winter hibernation right here in the Finger Lakes. It may still be a bit cold and wet, but it does feel like Spring is on the way. What a great time to get out and experience history, nature and fun in Cayuga County. Witness the changes of the season outside and in! Hike to see a waterfall at Fillmore Glen in Moravia, go bird watching and see some of our eagles in Owasco, or stay inside and take a tour of the Seward House Museum.

I am almost OCD checking on the progress of the Snow Drops, Winter Aconite and crocus in my yard. When they appear, I know it is Spring – or almost. I am readying my seedling pots after checking out the seeds and baby plants at Dickman Farm.

This year I am re-cycling toilet paper roll by cutting them in half and filling them with potting soil as the bed for the sprouting seeds. When the seedlings are ready in May or June, I can plant the whole thing in the garden as it will just deteriorate over the summer.

While walking to the Y the other morning, I heard some sparrows chirping, chirping, but could not find them. Finally, I saw one up under the gutter at the neighboring church. It does seem a bit early yet to be thinking nesting. The V’s of geese and duck are filling the sky. It is fun to try and locate the quacking flock overhead.

Our local murder of crows is really congregating in trees throughout Downtown Auburn. PBS hosted a TV show on the crows explaining how intelligent they are; how they mate for life and how they actually have different vocalizations for danger, friend and such. See if you can discern this crow language when you see them in the trees.

My daughter and I are going to check out the nesting eagles at Owasco Flats at the southern end of Owasco Lake. Wear good shoes as there are walking trail along the old railroad beds. I am sure the skunk cabbage will be stinking too! Maybe we will amble on down to Moravia to check out Jenning’s Department Store and see the new exhibition on Millard Fillmore at the Cayuga-Owasco Historical Society. We might event take a hike at Fillmore Glen as the waterfalls should be putting on quite a show now.

If it is too cold, you can enjoy some inside activities. Schweinfurth Art Center will be offering “Play with Clay”, a series of classes for kids during the week-long Art Camp and will participate in First Friday, a community-wide free evening, by offering contemporary folk music by Lindsey Tidd. You can view the current exhibition, Made in New York, an annual juried exhibition featuring work by artists residing in NYS, for free.

Over at the Seward House Museum, The Civil War Program Series honoring the sesquicentennial of the Civil War will launch on April 6 from 6 – 8 pm with “The Photography of Conflict”. Professor of Visual Studies at Cornell University, Shirley Samuels, and photographic process historian, Mark Osterman of the Eastman House Museum, will give presentations on the social history of photography during the Civil War Era. Cost is $15 and seating is limited: reservations are required. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own photographs from that period for discussion, and stay for a reception following the lecture with light hors d’oeuvres.

A little history. A little nature. A lot of fun. It is all here in Cayuga County.

Ignite the Winter in the Finger Lakes

Winter can be a rather cold white wonderland in the Finger Lakes Region, but come March 1 from 5 – 8 pm, Auburn will IGNITE the WINTER! Just one event of “First Friday”, a very popular on-going and year-round community happening, this featured area is hosted by IGNITE, the young professionals group associated with the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce, and several others business – all in the heart of Downtown Auburn in the Exchange Street Mall.

Every day, there was news about something new being added. Today it was a “live photo booth”. I hope that is like the old timey ones at the Five & Dime. Add innovative offerings and lots of diverse music, great food, free family fun activities, ice sculpture demonstrations and a Cook-off. Auburn will be HOT on March 1.

Did I say music? Catch Nightlite Mary, a band of four men who play alternative rock spiked with elements of punk, folk and jazz, from 5 – 5 :45. Then from 6 – 8 pm, discover Silver Queen Casket Co. as they heat it up with blues, classic country and rock. The crowd will be jumping – a good way to keep warm on a cold winter night!

Auburn Public Theater will host an exhibition by the Auburn Photography Club and live music – inside. There will be more indoor and outdoor fun for all ages including horse drawn wagon rides. The IGNITE folks continue to line up more festivities each day.

My daughter and I attended the first IGNITE the WINTER festival last year and nibbled, sang along, were astonished and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Watching an ice sculpture take shape was incredible; it was quite a process. In the end, it turned out to be a crow with its wings spread - perfect for Auburn with our “murder” of resident birds.

We also tasted our way through several cups of chili, chowder and soup made by local restaurants and community agencies. The competition was fierce and high. It was a Battle of the Bowl! When you sample, you are actually voting for a People’s Choice Award. There were some really delicious offerings I tried to recreate at home. I even taste tested Finger Lakes wines and beers. We will be back this year for sure.

No guarantees for the weather – just a guarantee that you will have a great time as we IGNITE the WINTER! Proceeds will go to the local food pantries. Check for updates on www.ignitethewinter.com and www.tourcayuga.com. During this and every First Friday, other community venue are also be open.

May you always have work for your hands to do, May your pockets hold always a coin or two,

May the sun shine bright on your windowpane, May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain,

May the hand of a friend always be near you, And May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

There’s a whole lot going on in Cayuga County this Spring. You just have to decide which event you want to attend. If you are a history buff then you’ll want to check out the exhibit about General John S. Clark. He was a Civil War veteran, cartographer, ethnographer, and Auburn City Planner and you can learn all about him at the Cayuga Museum through April 19th, 2013.

Are you looking for a comedy? Damsels in Distress will be shown at Auburn Public Theater on March 8th, and March 9th, 2013.

At the Schweinfurth Art Center, you can enjoy the art work of very young artists, of veteran artists, or budding senior citizens at Both Ends of the Rainbow.

On March 9th and 10th, 2013 you can visit the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail for cheeses and wines and you can even enter a photo contest to win a basket of locally made wines and cheeses.

And on March 10th, 2013 you can help to celebrate the life of Harriet Tubman by going to the Thompson Memorial AME Zion Church.

On March 14th, 2013 you can go to Auburn Public Theater and listen to Jean Kilbourne. She was groundbreaking in her work for the image of women. She played a large role in advertising for alcohol and tobacco addictions and eating disorders. She is quite renowned and we are lucky that she’ll be in Auburn.

Holy Toledo there’s so much to do I cannot decide where to go first!

Celebrate Earth Day in Cayuga County

On April 22nd, 2013, can you believe we will celebrate our forty-third Earth Day? Let’s see now, it’s the year 2013 so according to that calendar year we let the earth go for thousands, I mean millenniums of years and NOW we’ve decided to take good care of our sweet blue planet.

Our earth, this global home has been a bit overlooked, taken for granted, trashed, over-populated, polluted, and mismanaged. It’s heartening to know that we are now a bit shocked and worried about this lovely spinning ball and we are thinking of ways to clean up the place.

More of us are recycling, driving more efficient vehicles, paying attention to chemicals in products, buying local, but what else can we do besides using cloth bags at the grocery store?

I googled this and here is a great website: How to celebrate Earth Day

The list is simple:

Plant trees, use natural objects for arts and crafts, do some research on our giant home, recycle, reuse, clean out your barns, homes, garages and donate to good will so that others can use what you don’t need, clean up the roadways of litter, talk about Earth Day and ways to celebrate with your friends and family, ride your bike or walk, and enjoy this season.

The Sterling Nature Center would be a great place to visit and enjoy the beauty of our earth, with 1400 acres with 2 miles of Lake Ontario shore and 5 miles of Hiking Trails. The Center has: a diversity of habitats; public programs; picnic shelter; observation decks; exhibits; gift shop; and a canoe launch into Sterling Creek. Open dawn to dusk (every day of the year).

Sterling Nature Center, which is located in northern Cayuga County has two programs lined up to commemorate this sacred event: Pizza & Petals and Trail Work Day. Check them both out or just attend one! The nature center offers some amazing birding at their rookery with multiple nests for the Great Blue Heron.

Pizza & Petals - Saturday April 20

Pizza (noon) & Wildflower Walk (1pm)

Celebrate Earth Day early with Nature’s spring beauties, trillium, hepatica and other woodland wildflowers. At 1pm naturalist and Sterling Nature Center Director Jim D’Angelo will led a walk along the trails of the nature center for a look at some of nature’s beautiful woodland wildflowers. Identification, natural history and interesting facts about the spring woodland wildflowers will be discussed on this walk. As a special treat before the walk homemade pizza and Ontario Orchards’ apple cider will be available from noon to 1pm.

If you would like to join us for pizza please let us know so we can provide enough for everyone, contact the nature center at 315-947-6143 or snc@co.cayuga.ny.us. You do not have to partake in the pizza to join us for the wildflower walk. There is no fee for this program, but donations will be accepted and greatly appreciated. The Sterling Nature Center is located at the end of Jensvold Rd in northern Cayuga County in the town of Sterling just up the road from the Sterling Renaissance Festival grounds.

Trail Work Day – Saturday April 27 10am to Noon

The Sterling Nature Center is looking for some volunteers from the community to help with a few large projects like building bridges on the Wetland Loop or Two Tail Trails as well as help spreading woodchips on the Heron Trail. We are seeking groups or individuals that would be interested in supplying much needed labor and a few individuals to be crew leaders for each project.

Please contact Jim D’Angelo at 315-947-6143 or snc@co.cayuga.ny.us if you or your group is interested in lending a helping hand.

8th Annual Spring Poetry Reading in Auburn, NY

Roses are Red

Shamrocks are Green

The Schweinfurth Art Center

Best poems you’ve ever seen

Wait a minute! Did I just say poems to see? Yes. Glenn Miley from Sherrill, NY is one of the best visual poets in the world.

Glenn is a farmer who raises poems along with crops. His poems are funny, homespun, and far reaching.

Glenn is one of many who show up for these acrobatic poetic events. Poets come from Camillus, Baldwinsville, Skaneateles, Rochester, Ithaca, Weedsport and of course good old Auburn.

It’s a fun time. It’s free. Refreshments are served. On Friday, April 19th, 2013, the Schweinfurth Art Center will open its doors at 6:30 PM for people to meander around to enjoy the art show. Then the readings will take place from 7-9 PM.

Jim Delaney is the Master of Ceremonies—he always opens up the evening with his self-effacing poems and some prose from his recently released book, Hogarth's Reign of Terror (The Hogarth Saga).

The poetry that is shared is from a wide array of people who totally enjoy the written word, who love to listen to the music of language, who enjoy being transported across eons, into neighborhoods, under beds, over obstacles, and through the minds of artists.

The evening is a wonderful time to visit with people from Central New York, those who enjoy art, culture, humor, and Jim’s famous guacamole dip.

Because I began my blog with a poem I figure I must end with one:

If you want to enjoy a fun spring evening

With family, friends, or just you

Come to the Scwheinfurth on April 22nd

Get ready to be made anew

Bobbie Panek lives in Central NY. She’s a poet, writer and wanderlust. You can read more about her at Bobbiepanek.com

Howland Island Wildlife Management Area

We enjoyed the ride to the Montezuma Audubon Center. We joined 8 others who were also going on the nature hike. Our guide, Chris Lajewski was so friendly and welcoming. He offered loaner binoculars to anyone who needed a pair. We all used the rest room and looked around in the gift shop and in the glass terrariums at the turtles. There were two telescoping lens pointing to a Horned Owl nest in the forest off in the distance. It was fun trying to find it.

Eventually we all rode with Chris in the Center’s van. He drove us a short distance to Howland’s Island. We passed over a salt marsh—which is quite rare. Its veins run deep. We watched a coyote marching across a field—totally at home. We got out of the van and walked en masse down the trail for a 2-3 mile walk that would take us 2-3 hours. We met a John Deere tractor and a large dump truck. We learned that the state leases 200 acres of muck land to farmers.

The Island needs to be managed. It was wild until the building of the Erie Canal, and until farmers ditched, drained, and diked areas. Now the refuge has to be managed to keep it fit for migratory birds. Howland’s Island is globally significant for millions of birds.

Immediately we saw birds: Bald Eagles, Northern Pintails, a Cooper ’s Hawk, and many ducks and geese. We saw a beaver lodge, fox and rabbit tracks, turkey vultures and one trumpeter swan.

With about a dozen of us walking on the snowy trails the sound that we made was crunch, crunch, crunch. But as soon as someone heard or saw a bird or flock of birds, we all stopped to listen and look. It was a sacred walk, Its purpose to appreciate raw nature. It was just lovely. A few times, Chris would give out a call “CSHH, CSHH, CSHH” to sound like a distressed bird. We stood silent and waited for a response.

There are nine active Bald Eagle nests. There are many Osprey nests along Rte’s 5&20. There are twenty-five miles for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing and numerous water ways for canoeing and kayaking.

Chris is a friendly guy who is knowledgeable and helpful. There are activities every month. This was my first bird watching experience. But I have a feeling it’s the beginning of a new sport. I loved it.

Check out the Montezuma Audubon Center’s website for many fun activities:

April 18 & 19: Roll Out the Red Carpet for the Cerulean Warbler

Vendors and Exhibitors Wanted for the 7th Annual Wildlife Festival on Saturday May 4 from 10 am – 3 pm.

Strawberry Fields

Come June what can beat strawberry shortcake made with berries you picked right here in the Finger Lakes? Not much is my answer. So get out there and enjoy! Make a scrumptious Strawberry Shortcake for dessert tonight!

I will share my shortcake recipe with you. My family likes old-fashioned baking powder biscuits, but with some sugar added. I served it last week to a bunch of gals who were over for lunch and it was a hit. The berries were from some other place and OK, but not quite like locally picked. With this recipe, you can leave out the sugar and it is a great sandwich roll.

Linda Eldred, owner of Strawberry Fields Hydroponic Farm, Rte. 20W, started her unique farm stand about 5 years ago. She visited a hydroponic farm and was fascinated by the concept. When the opportunity to buy one came along, she jumped at the chance and moved it to the current site. Her husband is a big help at the stand, but he also manages over 1,400 acres of field crops.

What makes this farm so distinctive is that there is no stooping to pick the strawberries. They are planted in vertical rows in a natural medium – not in soil - and are “fed” 3 times a day with a nutrient rich water solution. Folks who use walkers and wheelchairs can easily maneuver into the rows and spend an afternoon picking sweet strawberries.

Opening Day will be May 25 from 9 am – 6 pm with free samples of jams & jellies, cheeses, fudge and a new flavor of Strawberry Cheese Cake; balsamic vinegars, olive oils and plants. Buy a hanging basket and get a 4”x6” American flag to wave at the Memorial Day parade.

Linda also offers the great option of “Take-Home-Desserts”. Don’t want to bake? Pick up a package of shortcakes, a few quarts of berries and some whipped cream – and you can create your own dessert in minutes.

There are several other spots to pick strawberries in the area including:

Giancarelli Farm, Winery and Greenhouse, Shortcut Road, Weedsport. 626-2830.
Owasco Flats Nature Reserve

Grab your friends, your kayaks and canoes, and get ready to paddle through a wonderland in the Finger Lakes. Cayuga County offers some great kayaking along the Owasco Inlet on the Owasco Flats. The Owasco Flats Nature Reserve is holding a free event on Saturday, June 8th, 2013 at 10 a.m. If you don’t have your own canoe or kayak, arrive early and you can rent a boat at the South Shore Marina.

My friend Jan and I went on this amazing trek a couple of years ago and here is what I wrote about the day…

Dragonfly with black and white checkered wings led us into the narrow waterway. Water bugs spun like carbonation on the surface. The water a mirror, we are reflected down and up. Wild flowers color the shore, orange jewel weed, golden rod, lavender morning glories

A white butterfly close enough to kiss, and then a small dragonfly with gossamer wings rode on my kayak with me. Together we paddled along the ribbon of water under low branches to the entrance of a beaver dam. When we turned right the dragonfly flew off. Jan and I continued south between tall ferns, and noticed a wooden bird house that was two-feet tall for wood ducks.

With bumpy logs lurked just below the surface, while a monarch butterfly looped overhead, we navigated around bends, our paddles making the slightest sounds.

Cars could be heard off in the distance but where we were--there were dragonflies, birds chirping and all was quiet except for when--a large fish jumped so high beside my boat--I jumped and let out a Holy Toledo!

A memorable day kayaking along the Owasco Inlet on the Owasco Flats, was so much fun. For more information check out the link here: Fun Day on the Owasco Flats

And if you aren’t available that day…plan to go for an enjoyable ride as soon as you are able. It’s a lovely place…

Emerson Park is a Happening Place

Emerson Park, one of the most beautiful places in Cayuga County, is the proud home of the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse. Located at the foot of Owasco Lake, Emerson Park holds memories of days gone by when families flocked there for picnics. The brightly painted horses on the Carousel brought joy to many, and the dances held in the Pavilion were a big draw for the surrounding towns.

The Pavilion was recently renovated. It still has the initial shape and charm of the old establishment but it has been renovated on the inside. It’s an ideal place for wedding receptions, class reunions, and retirement parties. I’ve been to several wedding receptions there including a winter wedding where white lights reflected off the snowy land and the lake provided a wonderful backdrop.

Fortunately for the residents of Cayuga County and tourists looking for a “Broadway Show in the Finger Lakes”, the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse is a true gem. My husband and I have had season tickets for the past ten years and we’ve enjoyed every performance. Replacing the painted horses are colorful musicals.

Within recent years (2001) Cayuga County added a new pier that reaches out into Owasco Lake, which is one of the amazing Finger Lakes. I remember the first time I went to check out the new pier. I was delighted. Whoever the architects were, whoever the designers were, whoever the bricklayers were—they all deserve praise. The pier is enchanting. They thought of everything. I especially like the geometric brick design of the path on the pier. I love the green rounded benches, the green rod iron railings, and the intriguing gazebo at the end.

Emerson Park has so much to offer: the Ward O'Hara Agricultural Museum, new playground equipment, rentable pavilions, bike paths, Little League Ball Park, disc-golf, a boat launch, extensive parking lot, and the park is well manicured with flower beds and big old trees provide wonderful shade.

Whether you want to go there to recapture beautiful old memories of fishing with your dad, swimming, picnics, music in the park, playgrounds, July 4th fireworks, it’s all still there--only now--it’s even better.

Inspiration for Artists All Over Cayuga County

A drive down any of the country roads in Cayuga County can be inspirational for an artist. Wide open vistas of the Owasco, Skaneateles and Cayuga Lakes, colorful sunsets and dramatic foliage will have photographers oohing, ahing and snapping away.

Picturesque farms with side yard vegetable gardens – with zucchini, beans and strawberries for sale at a stand - red barns and tile siloes are the epitome of Upstate New York telling the story of a hardworking life. Black and white dairy cows will watch you as you drive past, but will continue to chew away.

Fields of corn and soy beans ripple in the breeze. Don’t get me started on the round hay bales all lined up in the field. The way the light plays off of them is incredible. Even Monet would be inspired to paint here.

Clear blue skies dotted with the occasional fluffy cloud can inspire landscape painters while dazzling purple Loose Strife, pink Queen of the Meadow, Golden Rod and yellow Buttercups are a colorful palette worthy of any Van Gogh painting.

If you are a gardener, stop by a nursery like Dickman Farms for a new addition to your plant collection at your house. Take a small growing piece of the Finger Lakes home that will remind you of your visit next Spring.

During any season the countryside can offer a new look at the region. I can never quite decide which time of year I like best. During winter, you can see old foundations and the dark silhouettes of trees. The new tender greens of Spring and that special smell after a rain really grab me. But Summer with the rolling fields of wheat and other grains and the aroma of a family picnic are pretty good too. And glorious Fall when the maples, oaks and beeches are turning is not to be missed. You need to travel those country roads during every season take it all in.

The Apple Station

The Apple Station is a magical place tucked away in Cayuga, New York. Looking for it is like a treasure hunt. Get yourself to the junction of Route 90 and Rte. 326 and you will be close. Just off 326, turn down Cross Road. Soon you will approach some signs on the left. Pull down to the 2nd sign and in front of your eyes will be a store that looks like it was plucked from a movie set.

An antique car is parked out front. On the front porch are numerous old gas pumps, and the inside is such an inviting space; it’s adorable. On the walls are old gas signage, old maps, and all kinds of antique auto signs.

They sell many products all made in New York: bags of their own hand-picked apples, cheese from Pulaski, handmade jewelry, jams, jellies, honey from Moravia, maple syrup from Horseheads, and potatoes from Locke. They also sell t-shirts and popping corn.

In the fall, they sell sweet cider, squash, pumpkins, and Indian corn. And all year long, they sell their homemade apple and grape wines.

I asked Kathy Wintamute, who co-owns the store with her husband Robert, what the difference is between hard Apple Cider and Apple Wine. She hemmed and hawed and said that, ironically, it has yet to be spelled out and that the process used to make them is basically the same.

What is ultra unique about their wine are their funky labels. One wine, “Moo Moo Blue” is named after their dog, and you can observe him walking around while you drink his moniker wine.

The Prison City Ramblers Car Club met there recently for an antique car event. All of their amazing antique cars surrounded the place. Kathy and Robert had a contest where guests would vote on their favorite car. Ed Pinkney’s car won so the Apple Station owners created an apple peach wine, put a photo of Ed’s car on the bottle and called it “Sweet Ride.”

Kathy and Robert will go out of their way to customize a party for you. Their space is rentable. It would be ideal for a small wedding, a retirement party, or a family get-together. Check out their website The Apple Station.

They offer Saturday night music events and they have a murder-mystery wine tasting dinner scheduled for the end of the month. So check out their calendar for local bands and fun events. Also check out their facebook page for more updated info.

I mentioned to Kathy that “American Pickers” might come around to buy their old metal gas station signs. She said that actually Danielle from the show has called them twice already. Robert isn’t interested in selling anything yet. But don’t be surprised if when you’re there, Mike or Frank from “American Pickers” walk in begging to purchase one of their colorful antique signs.

Oh and by the way, their apples are delicious. I bought a peck of Macintosh and ate one on the way home.

Dorothy Wickenden is coming back to the Finger Lakes

This time Dorothy Wickenden will be at the Morgan Opera House, in Aurora, N.Y. We are fortunate to have this highly acclaimed biographer, who is the executive director of The New Yorker, back in our midst.

The book Nothing Daunted tells the story of two young women from Cayuga County who break tradition, were early feminists, and traveled to Colorado to be teachers in the middle of nowhere. Wickenden is the granddaughter of one of these brave women.

I don’t know what’s more exciting: the fact that Wickenden wrote the book about two women who are from the Finger Lakes, or that she will be telling her story on Saturday, November 10, 2012, at 8 PM, for free, at the amazing, historic, Morgan Opera House.

The Morgan Opera House holds voices from long ago—built in 1899 by Louise Morgan Zabriskie, this theater is on the top floor of the Aurora Free Library. The Tudor style building sits on a hill, across from Cayuga Lake. It’s on the sweet, small strip of downtown Aurora.

When you walk up the wooden stairs leading to the Opera House you can feel the presence of history. The space is delightful. So much of this theater is authentic. The seats are original. The room is small enough that there isn’t a bad view.

So jot down on your calendar now: Saturday, November 10, at 8 PM. Go to downtown Aurora, climb the wonderful wooden stairs, sit down in one of the original wooden seats placed there lovingly in 1899 and enjoy.

Nothing Daunted is a wonderful true story about two brave, intelligent socialites who could have stayed home with their wealthy families and just waited to marry into money. But instead they chose to be pioneers, to live frugally, somewhat brutally in the northwest.

They found excitement, love, hardships, and a renewed sense of self.

Fall Decorating in the Finger Lakes

This week, I hit one of my favorite farmer’s stands in Cayuga County and picked up a huge pile of “aliens” or as you could call them – gourds. These gnarled and twisted, wart covered, multi-colored vegetables look like they come from some other universe, but they are perfect decorative accents during the fall season. They are a very inexpensive way to bring the nature and color of the Finger Lakes into your home.

I picked up an assortment of shapes, sizes, colors and textures. These will add a festive touch to my Halloween decorations and then deck out my Thanksgiving table. I often pile them up in a wooden bowl with a few apples. This both looks and smells good as the apples ripen. A quick wipe with a dry cloth and any dirt can be removed before you start your arrangement. After I am done with the gourds and apples, I toss them out in my garden and the birds and squirrels enjoy snacking on them. There might even be a seed that germinates next spring and I will have my own crop of aliens.

Largely inedible, gourds were domesticated by man over 10,000 years ago and were used for utensils like bowls and cups and also as musical instruments. Varieties range from the dolphin, crock neck, bird house, egg, bottle which resemble bowling pins, Turk’s Turban and more. They can be the size of an egg or as big as a basketball. Colors vary from creamy white to bright orange to deep green with stripes, polka dots and all other design combinations imaginable! There are even mini-gourds which look like miniscule pumpkins. Today, craftsmen around the world still use gourds for utilitarian purposes but also for jewelry and basket making.

Drive down just about any county road in the Finger Lakes, or stop into a Cayuga County Farmers Market and you will find your own supply of gourds. Be inspired by these invading, bizarre aliens!

Give Thanks for the Finger Lakes

This Thanksgiving we have so much to be grateful for. Here in the Finger Lakes we are surrounded by rich, beautiful farmland, long rows of vineyards thick with vines, and the steel blue waters of numerous lakes.

We celebrate four seasons each bringing its own unique personality. Right now autumn is abundant with gold, red, and orange hues.

Culturally, Cayuga County is bursting with art, music, theater, and history. All you have to do is check our events listing and you’ll immediately find fun events to attend.

This Thanksgiving I hope that you feel blessed. It can be easy to find simple joys in life.

Being from a big Irish Catholic family, whenever our family got together to share that delicious meal we would naturally start our teasing and maybe not choose our words too carefully. We decided to create a Thanksgiving tradition.

Whenever we sit down for that wonderful dinner, someone says a blessing and then soon after we take turns telling the person to our left something that we like about him/her. Every person is included and I’ve found that the sweetest remarks come from the youngest and the oldest members of our family. It can be something as simple as “You’re a great cook”, to “Thanks for helping me yesterday on my project.”

So whether you live locally in our beautiful Finger Lakes area or farther on please tell the person next to you something that you appreciate about them. The feeling it creates is what Thanksgiving is all about.

Not only are the Finger Lakes beautiful to behold, but Cayuga County is a knitter's paradise, with so many locally spun and dyed yarns available. I learned to knit the summer I was 8 while spending a month with my grandmother. She was always knitting – baby sweaters in mint green for her church’s Holiday Bazaar or, strangely, 24 foot long white cotton bandages for a leper colony in Hawaii.

On afternoon as the weather was turning, I started thinking about knitting again. A stop at All Tied Up Yarns inspired me to start a quick but beautiful project. Andrea Cosachov, owner of the yarn emporium on State Street in downtown Auburn, will tell you all about her yarns – and that’s no tall tale!

Step into the inviting shop and you will be wowed by the color. Walk along and touch the multi-colored yarns, and your fingers will delight in caressing incredibly soft fibers. The shop is full of locally spun yarn, with some dyed in Syracuse, The Adirondacks or further west in the Finger Lakes Region out in Interlaken. There are wools, silks and various combinations and loads of oh-so-soft Alpaca yarn. She also has accessories like wooden needles, yarn bowls and wooden or metal buttons plus magazines and patterns books for motivation.

10 best reason to knit? You can make unique items all by yourself to give or keep for yourself. You can take knitting anywhere – a doctor’s waiting room, a child’s soccer game and even on a plane. Knitted hats, scarves and sweaters keep you warm. On a diet? Knitting keeps your finger busy – no snacking allowed. Knitting relaxes you and lowers your blood pressure. It is fun to play with the color and textures of a project. And it is social – it gives you something to talk about or share with a new friend. Andrea also offers beginner and intermediate classes and holds weekly Book Club and Knit Night.

Andrea will share her pattern for The Wave Scarf when you visit her shop. If I can knit one so can you! Get busy. Christmas is just around the corner.

Annual Holiday Traditions Open House

It is all about tradition during the Holiday Season and the Finger Lakes is no exception to that rule. In Auburn, on the second Sunday of December, museums and churches throughout the community will open their doors to the public offering free admission, music, refreshments, family activities and more. This year, Sunday December 9 is the day for the Annual Holiday Traditions Open House in Auburn.

My daughter and I have found we just cannot hit all the sites in this one afternoon of festivities and need to be a bit strategic in our decision making. We may see friends and neighbors at one spot and then again at another. Everyone is jolly sharing details about where and what they have seen and where they are going next.

This year, we may start at the Ward O'Hara Agricultural Museum out near Emerson Park on the shore of Owasco Lake where a wood stove in the old-fashioned kitchen is used to bake cookies you can then decorate. Don’t miss the horse drawn carriage rides. Subsequently, we will be off to Genesee Street to visit the Cayuga Museum to check out their “You Are Here” exhibition which explores a wide assortment of local maps where we will compare streets of today to those of 1803 and 1906. I hope we can find our neighborhood.

Then right next door to the Schweinfurth Art Center for Quilts=Art=Quilts, an international juried exhibition of contemporary quilts. Be ready to be amazed at the imagination and talents of the artistic quilt makers. These are not your grandma’s quilts. There will be also a Trunk Show at 2 pm which features the work of one special artist.

Circle around to Downtown Auburn and catch the decorated Seward House Museum, bedecked by local florists and artists folks. Do check out the children’s room and the master bedroom as one of my buddies and I have been busy making Victorian-style decorations for these two areas in this historic home. Perhaps you will inspired to deck the halls in your own home! A quick stop further down South Street and you will enjoy the Harriet Tubman Home.

There will be music offered at The Willard Memorial Chapel throughout the afternoon; Westminster Presbyterian Church by Masterwork Chorale; St. Mary’s Church by Voices of Faith and, finally, at St. Francis of Assisi Church over on Clark Street by The Auburn Chamber Orchestra.

For a complete schedule, visit the website of The Historic and Cultural Sites of Auburn NY or Auburn History’s Home Town. See you around Auburn!

Fun Finger Lakes Crafts

Drive down a country road during fall in Cayuga County and you will see some rather tall brown stems with round knobs at the top. On closer examination, it is all spikey and prickly. What can it be, but Teasel! Are you looking for a new finger lakes craft project? Then try decorating for the holidays with teasel.

During the heyday of sheep farming in Upstate New York and other parts of New England, dried teasel flowers were used in textile processing to raise the nap of cloth – especially wool yardage. There were literally acres of teasel cultivated through the Finger Lakes. This was until the mid-1950’s when a metal comb was invented and teasel stopped being grown for anything other than for ornamental use.

But be careful if you decide to plant it in your yard as it is considered invasive. A biennial, it grows a small flat plant one year which you will be prone to pull up. The next year, it rises to its full height of 5 feet or more. Crowned with flowers in purple, lavender or pink, it can be quite lovely. The seeds are a real favorite with birds especially Goldfinches. The sleek silhouette can add great variety to the winter landscape as well. The seeds scatter themselves and I find “babies” between the brick in my driveway and patio areas. They are easy to transplant and usually make it to the next growth year. The center and biggest flower is called the King while the next size is the Queen and the rest of the smaller ones are just the serfs.

I love to use it in dried flower arrangements and have even spray painted the dried flower tips to add some zip to a seasonal display. Wear leather gloves when you harvest your teasel or your fingertips will be full of small barbs. A good pair of clippers makes the job easy. I always put a tarp in the back of the car to catch all the seeds and bits.

Years ago in Girl Scouts, we made a cute Holiday decoration of a reindeer using teasel flowers. I again would caution you to wear gardening gloves when making your own Rudolph. It Is an easy creation to make. You can even make a herd of deer.

Warm up your hot glue gun. Give the stalks a good shaking outside to knock out the seeds. Do this in a corner of your yard where you think you might like some teasel growing.

Start off with a King for the body and a serf blossom for the head. Clip stems into 4 legs of similar length about 2 ½ inches and a neck stem about 1½ inches long. Don’t make the neck too long or your Rudolph will be “head heavy” and not stand up! Search out two branching stems with two or three joints for the antlers. These are the racks.

Hot glue the legs into the belly of the King pushing them into the spiny seed area. Glue the antlers on the top side of the serf and attach the neck to the bottom side. Finally glue the neck to the body. You may need to adjust the legs for balance. Some people add a red felt nose and wobbly eyes; you can decide for yourself. Adjust as you go and give some personality to your own Teasel creation.

Annual Christmas Craft Fair at Cayuga Community College

Looking to make some serious headway on your Christmas shopping list? Then don't miss the Annual Christmas Craft Fair at the Cayuga Community College! It's a great opportunity to buy those special handmade gifts that are mostly made locally, here in the Finger Lakes Region. I try to go each year and I can quickly name some of the cool things we’ve gotten over the years.

My son Scott bought a handsome cane for his grandfather. Scott used his own money and he was so proud when he handed the beautifully sanded branch to ‘Pop’. I am now the fortunate owner of the cane and I use it when I walk in the woods. Scott is now 32, and lives in California. When I go for my walks I think of Scott and Pop each time.

I bought our wooden manger there about twenty years ago at the Christmas Craft Fair and we use it every year as a stable for our Nativity set. Each year I buy a handful of hand-knit nylon scrubbies and they last for a long time. I get them for each sink and bathroom. They come in different colors and are so useful.

I’ve bought many mittens and scarves for my grandchildren that are soft, warm, and tenderly made. And I bought corn bags for my husband and me that we warm up in the microwave to put by our feet on those cold winter nights.

Looking for the perfect way to celebrate a Finger Lakes Holiday? There are wonderful photos of the Finger Lakes, wooden bowls, jewelry, aprons, Christmas decorations, stuffed animals, scarves, painted tin, toys, and hand-knit sweaters. There are handmade cards, fudge, and local authors selling their books.

Down in the Cayuga Community College cafeteria are ethnic foods available if you want to take a break and eat lunch or just have coffee and dessert. There is ample parking in the college parking lot and easy access from many entrances.

The people milling around are your friends and neighbors as well as the people selling their wares. It’s a down-home, cozy atmosphere, so mark it on your calendar now Saturday, December 1, 2012 (10-5) and Sunday, December 2, 2012 (11-4) or visit the Cayuga Community College website.

Maybe I’ll see you there~

Best Quilt Show in the Finger Lakes

Right here in Cayuga County we are blessed with the Schweinfurth Art Center—a spacious place of light and creativity.

Yesterday I went with a friend to see the quilt show—an annual event that has made the Schweinfurth world famous. For more than thirty years this show has gained popularity with quilters, artists, tourists, schools, and groups from the Red hats to the Blue collars.

When you think of quilts you might lapse to nostalgic covers on your grandmother’s bed. But get ready to view out-of-the-box arrangements that tug at your emotions and take you to unknown places.

Some are haphazard lines, frayed, circles, and geometric, 3-D, giant, gentle, works of art. One is so busy that I dare you to stare at it for more than five seconds. Bet you can’t.

Some artists dye their own fabric, some paint, some cut and stitch, and layer. Some purposely cut and arrange chaotically. You can form your own opinion about why the artists choose their approaches and then you can read the Artist Statement that accompanies each work. Often times the statement will confirm your thoughts but then again some statements just don’t seem to explain the piece.

One quilt was hand dyed, hand painted, screen printed, stamped and marbled. What? Really? Did you ever think that material could go through that many phases of being?

One looks like a giant stained glass window. There is one opposite the welcome desk that is beautiful and lovely. But it’s not until you are far off in the other room and you turn to view it again, that it appears back-lit and looks like crinkled, colored foil.

It’s so relaxing and therapeutic to walk around the art center. And afterwards you can treat yourself to a cup of Keuring coffee (you know the kind where you can insert one of those small containers of gourmet coffee and instantly get a smooth delicious aroma.) Then you are invited to sit at a small table off to the side where you and a friend can discuss what you’ve seen or you can sit by yourself and dream.

Quilt show runs until January 6th, 2013. Treat yourself like I did. It’s fun, engaging and a great reason to visit the Finger Lakes.

Family Fun You Can Feel in the Finger Lakes

The Reva Rollerdrome is family fun in the Finger Lakes. It doesn’t matter how old you are, what color your hair is, what language you speak—put on some roller skates and you are cool.

I went there this weekend and I was pulled back into the past. Years ago my children went there frequently. Now I can’t wait to bring my grandchildren. Guess what? You know those colorful passes from years ago that might be in your catch-all kitchen drawer? They don’t expire!

The roller skating rink is very much the same with the flashing lights, pumping music, concession stand, arcade, lockers and a friendly staff. But it’s even better, maybe because it stood the test of time. How many places in the Finger Lakes have been in business for sixty-five years?

Mike and Ellen Ferro have poured their heart and soul into this business and it shows. Everyone there is having so much fun. I watched as a young boy celebrated his birthday with family and friends. Ellen said that three-year-old toddlers skate as well as one ninety-year-old gentleman who skates once a week.

Ellen talked me into lacing up. I got some women’s skates and got out on the floor a bit nervous. Even though I have not skated in twenty-five years, I did fine. I went around three times and didn’t stumble. However, I will admit that one time I had to smack my palms on a wall to stop. Hey, stopping was never my specialty.

I so much enjoyed feeling the vibration under my feet, and seeing the lights reflected on the polished wooden floor.

The Reva Rollerdrome is just as I remembered it. When things are perfect—you don’t want to make too many changes. Ellen voiced it well: “Roller skating is a great family activity, a healthy sport the whole family can enjoy.”

There are snacks galore—pizza, cotton candy, hot dogs, corn dogs, nachos - all reasonably priced plus vending machines, an arcade, lockers to stash your belongings, and booths to sit and sip some soda while watching colorful lights, and smiles on faces flying by.

This is one place in the Finger Lakes where groups (schools, boy/girl scouts) flock from Syracuse to Marcellus, Cato, North Rose, Wolcott, Moravia, Groton, and even Penn Yan.

Mark these dates on your calendar now: The City of Auburn Recreation Department sponsors FREE admission for skaters (rental skates are only $2) from 6-8 PM on 12/27/12, 2/21/13, and 4/4/13.

And Reva Rolls for Rotary will happen on Wednesday, December 26, 2013 from 6-8 PM. The cost is $4/admission and the money raised is for its Youth Exchange Program.

This is truly a lifetime activity. What are you waiting for? Even if stopping isn’t your forte, roller skating is always fun.

Bobbie Panek lives in Central NY. She’s a poet, writer and wanderlust. You can read more about her at Bobbiepanek.com
