March is Women’s History Month
March is National Women’s History Month and it’s the perfect time to take a few moments to think about the many women who have done amazing things and maybe do a few rather amazing things yourself. So, grab one of your fabulous female friends and make some of your own history and fun in New York’s Finger Lakes Region, the birthplace of Women’s Rights! The early women’s reform movement began in nearby Seneca Falls with the first women’s rights convention in 1848. Whether it’s history, wine, food or amazing and fun events, we have plenty of ideas to inspire your celebration of Women and Women’s History Month!

2. Visit the Seward House Museum, take a guided tour and spend some time exploring The Vote: Changing Minds, Changing Times Exhibit. The exhibit encompasses sisters Frances Miller Seward and Lazette Miller Worden’s grassroots involvement with the local fight for women’s equality and suffrage. Also, not to be missed is the “Forged in Freedom.” Exhibit. This exhibit considers the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman through the lens of her relationship with the family of William H. Seward. 3. Sign up for The Real Housewives of Auburn Event at the Seward House Museum and take a walk on the wilder side of history with this outrageous specialty tour. University of Rochester researcher and historian Shellie Clark shares some of the more shocking and scandalous stories from the Seward family archives. Gossip, intrigue, and tales of libations abound in accounts you won’t hear about on any other tour at the SHM.

5. Tour the Harriet Tubman Home, get your picture taken with her statue. Did you know that 2022 is the 200th Birthday of Harriet Tubman? Auburn, NY was the town she chose to spend the last 50 years of her life in. The bicentennial of Harriet Tubman’s birth presents the unique opportunity to shine a bright light on the famed abolitionist, Civil War spy, suffragist, and humanitarian. 6. Visit a women owned business. Cayuga County is home to many women owned businesses. 7. Howland Stone Store Museum in the Sherwood Equal Rights Historic District is a must see. There you can view original women’s suffrage posters, an original Underground Railroad pass and more. While you are in the neighborhood, be sure to check out Opendore, the home of Emily Howland, who was known for her contributions to education, women’s rights, and abolition. Both properties are on the National Register of Historic Places.
