Spooky and not so Spooky Halloween Fun
The spookiest holiday of the year is just around the corner, I have put together a few spooky and not so spooky things to do this season in Cayuga County! But first…
But first a little Halloween History
This is where my kids would groan a bit but, If you have been reading my posts, you know I can’t resist.
Halloween the first big celebration of fall. Halloween in some form has been celebrated for over 2,000 years. Its origins can be traced back to the Celtic holiday of Samhain, which marked the new year. In the US Halloween celebration gained popularity in the us in the late 1800’s with traditions such as carving pumpkins dressing in costumes and pulling pranks and parties.
The idea of wearing a costume was to trick the goblins and ghost in thinking you were one of them and thus leave you alone. In 1927 the term “trick or treat” was first used and in 1930 the first mass-produced costumes appeared, and in 1950 the costumes became more affordable, and kids started wearing costumes from popular movies and comics, such as Batman, princesses and clowns.
Now days Trick or Treat is a less literal phrase, few children today have no intentions of pulling a prank if they are not offered a treat.

Home Run Halloween
at Falcon Park, October 26, 3:00-6:00 at Falcon Park Auburn NY. This free family event includes trick or treating on the field, a children’s zone with Jeff the Magic Man, face painting, a bounce house, coloring contest, refreshments and more!
Trunk or Treat
at Fingerlakes Mall Parking Lot Saturday, October 26th 12pm to 3pm Food Trucks, candy, games, costume contest and more! Admission only $1 per participant
Witch Hat Hunt and Great Pumpkin Hunt at the Ward O’Hara Agricultural Museum– From October 1-Halloween visit the museum and enjoy a family friendly scavenger hunt for witches hats and pumpkins during their annual Halloween Witch Hat Hunt & Great Pumpkin Hunt. Everyone who participants will receive a goodie bag!
Old Fashioned Halloween Event at The Ward O’Hara Agricultural Museum-October 19, 10 am -4pm. This event is free and open to the public.
Refreshments. Music, Tours and more!
O’Neil Family Farm Pumpkin Patch
Visit for family fun. You can either pick your own pumpkins or select from the many pre picked pumpkins. The kids will enjoy the play area complete with tires to climb on, basketball hoop and a corn bin to play in! You will also find a large selection of Gourds, Squash, Sunflowers and more! No admission fee
Halloween Safe House Event
Booker T Washington Community Center’s Annual Halloween Safe House will be held on Saturday, October 26th from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Get ready for lots of slime, crafts, games, concessions, a coloring contest, a costume contest, and more! There is no cost for this event. 
Some Spooky Fun
- Haunted Hay Ride through the Swamp October 12, 6-10pm Fee: $10 per person ages 8 and older, and 7 and under free. Please come out and enjoy a good scare. All staff is volunteer and this year we will be offering concessions. Enjoy hot dogs, mac and cheese and chili and chili dogs and walking tacos. All at a a reasonable price. We will also have soda, water, hot chocolate and apple cider for sale.
- Seward House Museum Specialty Tour: Death Rites and Victorian Mourning Culture October 19 11:00am-Noon.
Learn about the bygone customs and symbols of death used by Victorian-era Americans, including the Seward’s. With war, rampant disease, and more, death was not an unusual visitor to an 1800s household. Victorians developed ways of coping with death that we may find strange today. - Seward House Museum presents Haunted History Tours of Auburn. Costumed guides will take guests around the Seward House grounds and the darkened streets of Auburn, sharing chilling tales of Victorian funeral practices, spectral encounters from Seward family lore, true crime stories, and other spooky accounts drawn from local folklore and history. $15 Adults, $10 Children (12 and under). - Zombie Apocalypse Halloween Party at Prison City This Halloween, step into a world where the undead roam, and only the bravest survive. Join us for a night of spine-chilling fun at PCB.October 26 6-10:00pm
