Cayuga County Businesses and Organizations Team Up to Recycle Eclipse Glasses
April 9, 2024 – Auburn, NY: Yesterday, thousands of people gathered around Cayuga County to don their eclipse glasses and witness the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse. But even now that the clouds have parted, the moon has moved, and the sky has returned to normal—you shouldn’t rush to throw away those glasses!
So long as they are undamaged, solar eclipse glasses are not single-use items. In partnership with Reuse Refuge—Auburn’s low-waste shop and refillery—the Cayuga County Office of Tourism is collecting eclipse glasses from around the county and will be working with national agencies who donate the glasses to communities in need at the next eclipse site. In the spirit of sustainability this Earth Month, we encourage residents and visitors alike to recycle their glasses at dedicated drop-off sites.
These sites include:
- Reuse Refuge: 144 Genesee St. Suite 104, Auburn, NY 13021
- NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center: 25 South St. Auburn, NY 13021
- Seymour Library: 176 Genesee St. Auburn, NY 13021
- onePhoto’s Main Street Emporium: 567 Main St. Fair Haven, NY 13064
- Sterling Nature Center: 15730 Jensvold Rd. Sterling, NY 13156
- Cayuga Lake National Bank: 165 Cayuga St. Union Springs, NY 13160
While each may have its own cut-off for glasses collection, the Cayuga County Office of Tourism requests that all glasses are dropped off by April 20, 2024,at the latest. Eclipse glasses will be mailed all at once to further reduce needless waste.
For any Cayuga County businesses or organizations who hosted an eclipse event and have leftover glasses, pick-up can be arranged by contacting the Cayuga County Office of Tourism at 315-255-1658.
